Low Pressure Sewerage Systems

In many locations, gravity sewers are difficult and expensive, requiring deep excavation and large diameter pipes. Low pressure sewerage systems use a grinder pump at each property, to deliver a fine slurry to a central gravity drain, or to a treatment plant. The pump is housed in a collection tank, and is automatically controlled by water level.

In many cases, there is a much lower capital cost associated with installing these systems over conventional gravity sewers. This is because this system requires smaller bore delivery pipes and these pipes do not require such deep installation. They also have the advantage of being able to follow the contours of the land, rather than having to drain. Where the terrain is very flat or rocky, they may provide the only solution for reticulated sewerage.

In this system, the water authority responsible for sewers owns the equipment, while the household is responsible for the minimal running costs.
